Originating in mainly Nathdwara, Rajasthanand also found in the Deccan, in areas of Aurangabad,Pichwai or Pichvai is one such marvelous practice of art about 400 years old, Pichwai art is done by paintaing illustrations,usually scenes from Lord Krishna’s life, on cloth,to narrate the stories to those that could not read or write, with the colours made up of mineral compounds and vegetable extract also, the coloursymoblize things like fertility, spirutality and new beginings.The term comes from the Sanskrit words ‘Pich’ meaning back, and ‘Wai’, meaning to hang. You can catch a glimpse of the folk art behind the deity at the Shrinath temple in Nathwarda, hung to celebrate Indian festivals.

Govardhan the divine Protector illustrates the story of Lord Krishna, the protector of the cattle & inhabitants of Braj. Govardhan is the sacred centre of Braj, the birthplace of Lord Krishna. It is believed that here, Lord Krishna defeated the angry Lord Indra, the deity of thunder storms and rain by lifting the mountain, thus giving shelter and protection to the devotees and the cattle, who stayed surprisingly undisturbed by hunger or thirst for seven days. His flute beckons all and so do the Pichwai painting.
